Why choose Magic PJ’s for PMU your brow service?

Today there are many options of permanent makeup providers. PMU (permanent makeup) is one of the most rapidly growing services in the cosmetic industry. It is no wonder: the effortlessness of having your brows expertly refined for you for up to two years at a time provides a feeling of freedom along with the confidence of a fresh appearance. Many PMU providers promote their businesses as clinics. A clinical setting is appropriate for permanent makeup as a cosmetic procedure that is paramedical in nature because of the penetration of skin with needles in order to deposit pigments for a desired aesthetic result.

At Magic PJ’s, I maintain clinical standards of health and safety in my PMU and tattoo studio that are compliant with local GGD standards.

I acknowledge that tattoo artists and tattoo shops have long had unsavory reputations and that because of these taboos clients may have doubts about choosing a tattoo artist over a clinical PMU technician to perform permanent makeup services, even if that tattoo artist is professionally trained as a PMU technician too. Even as a tattooer myself, I can totally understand that!

In this PMU blog post, I am happy to share some more information about my own training as both a tattoo artist and PMU brow specialist and why you may want to choose my artistry over a clinical application for your brow treatment.

Permanent makeup is a committed choice and investment, and you deserve to be informed about who you choose to professionally trust with such an experience.

What training has the PMU/tattoo artist at Magic PJ’s completed?

Angelica PJ Ridley (that’s me!) has earned certificates from de Huidspecialist in Eindhoven, Nederland. Original copies of the physical certificates, dated 2023, are on display in Magic PJ’s studio in a private room at The Little Nail Room in Utrecht. The certifications are for powder brow and nano hair stoke procedures. I also gained combination brow and mircroblading experience as part of my hair stroke training. My education emphasized hygienic standards, client care, and quality supply choices among the technical application of PMU.

While there are some regulations by GGD for PMU and tattoo, here in the Netherlands, it is legal (with inspection) to tattoo out of your own home and there is no training required which, to be honest with you, blows my American mind. It took months of research for me to even believe this! I really thought something was being translated wrong to me until I learned enough Dutch to confirm the truth. It was only after then that I found this KVK article in English that confirms these legal facts.

I was professionally trained by the legal health and safety standards of Los Angeles county, California for about two years (2018-2019) in a classic kind of LA street shop (Body Art & Soul) where artists are expected to be able to take just about any walk in request, making for adaptability to customizations in the artistry part of the work of tattooing.

(Pictured here is a photo of me in my apprenticeship practicing larger detailed Japanese style color tattoo on synthetic skin while using all health and safety protections required for a real tattoo.)

Los Angeles has some of the strictest legal tattooing guidelines in the world. In fact, the local licensure for tattooing in LA is specified to the county itself rather than the whole state of California because the rules are so specific. (Otherwise all other tattoo licensure in the US is issued by state regulation.) By California law, no reputable tattoo supply company may sell tattooing supplies to any residential (home) address, only to registered studio addresses.

While you don’t have to actually prove hands on education or proficiency to gain a tattoo license anywhere in the US either (but must pass a basic medical cross contamination test each year for license renewal in every state) the kinds of laws that restrict supply chains also ensure that the artists working in studios are vetted through a chain of existing tattooers as part of an unofficial but widely standard personal apprenticeship model of education.

Technician, artist, what’s the difference?

There is of course highly technical aspects to tattooing images as well as applying permanent makeup. Many tattoo artists are more technicians than artists too. Perhaps these kinds of technical tattooers are not adept at drawing original designs as other tattoo artists, but they can still produce amazing results by virtue of understanding the technical application and using stencils. Similarly, technical brow mapping principles can help achieve beautiful results for permanent makeup procedures. Also, not every talented artist makes for a good technical tattooer. I strive to combine insights from my lifelong work as an artist with the technical understanding of the craft of specialized permanent makeup tattooing for brows.

Insights from painting and drawing portraits among my many artistic pursuits has really been helpful in the realistic PMU results I am able to achieve. Getting the form of the eyebrows right has always been a key component to me for accurately depicting an individual’s unique face in portraiture. I look at my photographic references and discern the patterns of the hair strokes, how they lay. Now that I am practiced in PMU brow techniques, I can see how in my previous portrait process has always had a sort of brow consultation with these photo references, determining what approach (such as what kind of “combination brow”) the portrait called for in order to properly convey that particular person’s visage.

Like with my portrait art, I have a love for making you look more like yourself with my PMU artistry. In order to frame the light in your eyes, I focus on enhancing your natural brow form with appropriate color and patterns based on your unique features. Rather than creating the shape and color of an idealized eye brow over your existing brow (a method practiced by many PMU technicians), I instead allow the canvas of your brow bone shape, of your skin tone, of your natural hair patterns, to guide me to provide beautifully realistic results true to you.
