The Power of a Single Needle: A Difference Between Tattoo and PMU Procedures
Machine assisted permanent makeup is performed with a single needle. This is one reason why when properly applied, permanent makeup fades over time. This method keeps pigment from spreading instead, allowing it to dissipate so that it can be touched up and redefined. In fact, this is often not realized by first-timers with permanent makeup, but it is part of the standard procedure of all permanent makeup processes for there to be a follow up procedure 6-8 weeks after the initial application.
In tattooing, in which needle clusters are often used even for lining, we refer to a spreading out of ink as a “blow out” and a disappearing of ink as “fall out”. PMU is designed in mind to favor fall out which is the best prevention for blow outs which you certainly do not want on your face. The special tools and methods I use for PMU that are different from tattooing ensure a more delicate result that is appropriate for enhancing your natural features. For example, my PMU machine is a Permablend pen tool that runs with a much shorter needle throw than a tattoo machine.
This information can help explain why very delicate single needle body tattoos tend to have “parts go missing” over the years as it’s been described to me. Just like how permanent makeup needs touching up, so do most single needle body tattoos too. This is thanks to our bodies’ remarkable natural healing processes. Understanding how to work with the process processes is scientific but also magical.
